I faced a challenge when we started a family: my husband, Bill,had no domestic skills. He wanted to share parenting. Hisflexible hours as an academic allowed him to help at home. When I was a baby, the only thing my parents used to keep track of me in my crib was their own ears. I grew up in the days before all the fancy baby gadgetry and a baby alarm to keep tabs on the baby would have seemed as strange to my parents as a nanny spy cam.To keep track of what I was doing in my crib, they would stay within hearing range of my room and if they heard me cry out, they would come in and check on me. They did not have the luxury of a baby alarm sounding whenever I cried, like parents raising kids today do.The whole collection of baby observing devices began with a good idea. People were looking for a way to monitor their babies when they were far away, like downstairs in the kitchen while the baby was upstairs sleeping in its crib. Following a weight loss plan, to some people, is almost like manufacturing a reason to make excuses. It was always the most common subject of conversation in the office where I used to work: if the subject wasn't the red daygreen day discussion, a common mantra was 'food makes me happy. I'll just have one slice of cakechocolate. That won't really matter' and, in the next breath, 'I went shopping the other day and the only dress I could find for the office party was in a size . So I didn't buy it'. Excuses such as these prevent us from following a weight loss plan and, before long, dropping our newly formed diet routine and starting to 'eat normally' again, putting on even more weight and becoming despondent.So, how do we break the circle? Following my passion for handcrafting candles and soaps inbusiness has taken a new turn for me.
